We are very excited to announce our new partnership with Brooksville Elementary School in Florida, USA. Brooksville Elementary is located in a semi-rural area about an hour north of Tampa, and is a low socioeconomic school.
Most of the students at the school have never had the opportunity to travel, so each year the school holds a Global Celebration Day to ‘bring the world to the students’. On this day the school also supports a humanitarian effort, and this year we are very thankful that Brooksville Elementary School will be raising money to fund the Books in Homes Programme at Murray Downs School in the Northern Territory!
The way in which the students raise money sounds like a lot of fun! The Global Celebration Day is jam packed with plenty of great food and activities that all cost a quarter each. Each student works hard during the year doing chores, selling lemonade, selling aluminium cans, having yard sales and more to save up their quarters to donate! These kids don’t have much, but they are thrilled to work hard every year to help people around the world!
Murray Downs School (or Imangara School) is a very small school located in remote Northern Territory. The bush is rugged and the children walk from the local community to the school along the track that you can see in the image below.
Principal of Murray Downs School said of the project: “The staff and students of Imangara (Murray Downs) Community and School would like to send out sincere thanks to the students, families and staff at Brooksville Elementary School for their kind and generous thoughts toward the children of Imangara Community.
The main language spoken is Alyawarr which is the first language with Aboriginal English as the second dialect. We teach English as a second or third language and integrate Indigenous Language and Culture with many of our subjects.
The students are excited about their new friends at Brooksville Elementary and would love to be able to have conversations with students over the coming year through Skype.”
It is remarkable the impact that the Books in Homes Programme can have on children in communities and schools like Murray Downs in encouraging their love of reading, and we are hugely thankful to Brooksville Elementary School for their enthusiasm and support.
